Teddy-bear Cholla, Organ Pipe Cactus N.M. (click image to view larger) Probably not a “teddy bear” you would want to hug, this Teddy-bear Cholla (Cylindropuntia bigelovii) is found in the deserts of California, Arizona, and northern Mexico. This one was photographed in beautiful Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument in southern Arizona, a place I would [...]

Friday Quiz #187

Common along shorelines (and landfills!) of the eastern and gulf coasts, last week’s quiz bird, though the fish in the photo didn’t find any humor it its situation, was a Laughing Gull (Laurs atricilla) in non-breeding plumage. We’re coming inland for this week’s quiz, as always, good luck and great birding!

Snowy Egret, Florida (click image to view larger) A chose this photo for the week’s edition of Wings on Wednesday for a couple of reasons. First, one again it is snowing like crazy here at Bryce Canyon and, second, because this is a species you would almost have to keep you eyes closed to avoid [...]

Wood Bison, British Columbia (click image to view larger) In northern British Columbia & Alberta, as well as the southern portion of the Northwest Territories, you may encounter bison in your travels. Like any other skill, doing it well requires practice, and that lack of practice is clearly evident as I [...]

Greater Snow Goose, Ladd S. Gordon W.M.A., Bernardo, New Mexico (click image to view larger) Originally I wasn’t going to post another image from my New Mexico trip but, considering the weather the past 36 hours or so, I figured nothing would be more appropriate than a “snow” goose (I think another foot fell overnight). [...]

Rocky Mountain Elk, Yellowstone National Park (click image to view larger) This is an image I made at Yellowstone National Park and I always liked it because of the apparent reaction from the calf: Mom’s tongue out and the calf sort of reeling, wide-eyed and moving back as if to say “Eew! MOM! Don’t do [...]

Today’s Serendipity Saturday is a slide show of images from my just completed trip to New Mexico. The intent was to spend a lot of time at world famous Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, but, for reasons unknown, it was not as productive for photography as it had been in my 4 previous visits. [...]
