Friday Quiz #59
The bird in last week's quiz was a bit of a toughie: Lesser Goldfinch. Difficult to tell from the American Goldfinch, the biggest difference to look for is the paler (or fainter) wing bars on the Lesser. For this week we have another species of the American Southwest (wish they were here at Bryce). Good luck!

Kevin - I really enjoy these Friday quizzes - it helps me to sharpen my ID skills. I was noticing that its beak - not real long, but not real short. It seems to have the kind of beak that catches insects while in flight. The size of the bird seems to be small. Then I also noticed it has black legs and a white eye ring. So I narrowed it down to a small insect catcher. I then checked to see what bird would have a dark gray upper body with a light colored under body. Finally I came across (in my field guide) a blue-gray gnatcatcher, which could be found in the lower half of the country (which would also include Utah). Is it a blue-gray gnatcatcher?
