Friday Quiz #90
Here it is Friday already and time for another quiz! Our bird last week was a female Hooded Merganser. For this week we have a species I hadn't seen in the park for a few months now, but they have been seen along the roads the past few days foraging where the snow has melted. Good luck and good birding!

Hi Kevin - I knew I should have guessed last week's bird, but that's behind us now. I thought I had seen a picture of this bird once before, but I have never seen one around here. I kept telling myself that it looked like some type of finch or sparrow or cowbird when looking at its beak. I even thought I've seen only one other bird with that body shape and with that color bill around here. And that was the junco. When I finally checked out my field guide I noticed that this bird is considered the gray headed race of the dark-eyed junco. Another field mark I should have recognized right away was the white edges on its tail. The dark-eyed junco we get here in California is the Oregon race.
